Dusseldorf. May to October. In Dusseldorf I landed in a big and good business, and it was a hard struggle until I felt secure. I learned a great deal there - water-waving, hairpieces, perms and so on. Herr Muller was a good and fair boss, almost too good, for he never complained or scolded, even when the customers grumbled. I earned very well there on the commission system; my highest weekly turnover was 260 Marks, the lowest 150 Marks. Working in the shop with me was Herr Muller's brother, called Tehr, a capable, good man; you would never have noticed he was the boss's brother. There was also a Russian, who soon left for Borkum and Hamburg; I got on well with him. Lienert had joined a week before me, and, like me, was fighting for his very existence. We were good comrades for a long time, until I made the mistake, on an outing to the Neandertal, of not leaving his sister alone. From then on I was finished in his eyes. But he had his faults too - opinionated and all that; he thought he counted for more in the shop than I did, and he was self-serving. Hoffmann, a short dark fellow forever cracking crude jokes, a Jew with his blonde fiancee Franke Mut, was a case unto himself. Berndt was a straight-thinking, honest colleague.
