Swimming the Rhine for pleasure and to slip past the French occupation, then a cash-strapped night at Mannheim station

Translated from Willi's German.

...groschen. The one and finest pleasure I had here was bathing in Germany's most beautiful river, the Rhine. Twice I swam right across the current, and once I caught hold of a coal barge and let it tow me a kilometre upstream, before plunging head-first into the water and swimming across to the bathing beach. The beach itself was fairly large, and people lay there by the thousand in the hot sand, from grandmothers down to babies in arms. On the way back I had tied my kit onto my back, for if the French had discovered it, things would have gone badly for me. In Mannheim I spent the night in the waiting room, and when I wanted to check in my suitcase the next morning my money was not enough. So I slipped through the barrier with it and took it into the compartment.
